Photos of Isotype at the V&A Museum

If you missed the awesome Isotype exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum (2 Dec 2010 to 17 Mar 2011). you can at least enjoy some photos from there on Flickr. There is Isotype material and also a couple of pictures of artwork by Gerd Arntz.

Me and Dave Kellam saw the exhibition in early December. We felt a bit odd and at the same time privileged to know the Isotype material so well. The last time we saw it we got a great hands-on show by Michael Twyman. We could touch and smell and take photos of them as much as we wanted. And now the same material was under plexiglass and people where admiring them from a distance.

And of course, it still makes me proud that my department hosts the collection where many of these items are kept.

The visuals that should have been there

While reading all these interesting books I keep encountering the same problems over and over. Many of these academic writers just concentrate on producing text and don’t pay enough attention to the visuality of their articles. They either do not employ visual means at all, or they use them poorly.

From now on, whenever I have the energy, I’ll try to to show you their mistakes and show you how it should have been done. So here you have the first part of my new “series” The Visuals That Should Have Been There.

Rosch 1978: Principles of Categorization

Before saying anything negative I must say that I really like Eleanor Rosch’s theory on prototypes. The notion of categorisation is central to my thesis. After all, genres can be seen as one level of the categorisation process.

But I seriously dislike the way Rosch explains the two different dimensions of category systems in her 1978 article Principles of Categorization.1 There are two problems there, which both are really typical to academic writing.

First of all, she employs the visual metaphor of the vertical and horizontal dimensions, just with words! Come on, if you are making a visual point, why not show it? It’s one of the classic rules of teaching and presenting: show, don’t just tell. But at least the metaphor is not that complicated:

For purposes of explication, we may conceive of category systems as having both a verbal and horizontal dimension. The vertical dimension concerns the level of inclusiveness of the category – the dimension along which the terms collie, dog, mammal, animal, and living thing vary. The horizontal dimension concerns the segmentation of categories at the same level of inclusiveness – the dimension on which dog, cat, car, bus, chair, and sofa vary. (p. 30)

So it’s sounds quite simple, doesn’t it. First you imagine a vertical stack of words:

living thing
|
animal
|
mammal
|
dog
|
collie

And then you visualise similar stacks of words alongside that one, based on the words cat, car, bus etc. Right?

And after you have spent your time visualising the metaphor instead of just seeing it with a quick glance you move on and turn the page. And there is a table which seems to illustrate the point. But it is actually not directly connected to her text, but refers to related research on basic objects.

And now we get to our second problem: The table tells us the opposite of what she just explained in the text.

Whaaat? Why is the vertical dimension in her metaphor shown horizontally? And vice versa. Yes, it is connected to another study but why does it have to reverse the dimensions? Even if it is taken directly from another study, why not change it to suit the article? The table wouldn’t suffer from that. Another option would be to change the dimensions mentioned earlier to fit this table. Now the combination just doesn’t make sense.

I can think of a couple of explanations. Perhaps the table is just wrong. Maybe it wasn’t done by Rosch herself. Or perhaps in the text she is merely using abstract dimensions. It doesn’t really matter which is the vertical and which is the horizontal. Therefore, perhaps she means “dimension 1″ and “dimension 2″ without referring to the physical or visual world. And it’s just unfortunate that she employs the terms vertical and horizontal.

In any case, the end result is that you start doubting your own memory and/or comprehension. You have to go back to the previous spread, read the passage again, and compare that information with the table. At some point, you’ll realise that for the metaphor to work it doesn’t matter which dimension is which. But you have to be sure you understand the dimensions in the same way as Rosch, as she refers to the “vertical dimension” and  the “horizontal dimension” later in the text.

Now, it could be that I got this thing all wrong. Perhaps I’m not smart enough to understand a simple metaphor of two dimensions. But I seriously think something like this should be alongside the verbal metaphor:

Then you could omit the unfortunate table and refer to that basic object research by other means. The whole issue would be so much easier and clearer. And the reader wouldn’t have to waste his or her time on trying to visualise the metaphor. And even worse, trying to solve the contradiction between the text and the table.

It just makes me think how much time and brain power is wasted on obscure academic writing in general. Imagine the confusion of one reader like me, and then multiply that with thousands, tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands students and academics over the years. That’s a lot of wasted working hours.

Any lessons for writers (and editors)? When the issues themselves are complex, why not try to maximise the clarity and presentation of them. Pay attention to this kind of small details, even if they might feel trivial to you. Your beautiful scientific ideas will suffer if the readers get stuck on pesky elements like this.

Shocking Japan quake images – all two thirds of them

Right now the tv is offering great footage from the earthquake in Japan. We can watch live how the tsunami waves roll in sweeping away cars and houses. We can truly sympathise with the pain the Japanese are experiencing. Unfortunately, we get to see only slightly over two thirds, about 70 percent of the vivid images.

The lower third of the image is covered by the info panels where the main information seems to be that this is BREAKING NEWS. At best this is repeated three times. Yes, the image is a composite from several sources but nevertheless we, the viewers, get to enjoy all those flat colours and texts screaming BREAKING three times instead of the actual breaking news images.

It is especially annoying in shots where the focal point of the whole composition is clearly just under the panel. In the fire images we are left looking at the smoke plumes. With the rolling waves there’s also the problem that the movement should have some space to go to.

But luckily at least it is video image. So sometimes the camera moves enough to reveal what’s really going on. And these unfortunate shots are swamped with good ones. But they create this frustrating feeling that obviously there is all this great footage and we are just teased with it.

I just wonder do the tv channels nowadays bother telling the cameramen they’re going to cover one third of the image with panels? I wonder how frustrated he or she feels if  he/she compares the original footage to what was broadcasted. And as it really is such breaking news with such vivid imagery, do we really need to see the info panels all the time?

The chasm between you and the supervisor

All that distance between them

Ever been frustrated at a supervision meeting? Do you feel that they never really read the stuff you send them? Is your supervisor asking questions in the meeting which you have already answered before or in written form? Are you anxious as the precious little time you have with your supervisor is squandered like this? Is there anything you could do to change it?

I’m in a good position to see both sides of the fence. I’m discussing my own PhD project with my supervisors and an advisory group. At the same time I am supervising two MA students in their dissertation/thesis writing.1 So the mechanics behind the frustration is becoming clear. The main issue is the communication breakdown which stems from the asymmetry in the situation which affects on several levels.

Total time

The student devotes most of his time (and often life) to her/his thesis for a long period. The supervisor allocates (is allowed to allocate by the uni) a few hours to this one student every couple of months. For example, I’m allowed to spend 10 hours on each MA thesis.

Though resources

The student’s mind is employed full-time on the topic. He eats, breathes, sleeps the topic. This goes so far that usually no-one can stand the student because the thesis topic is all he talks about. The supervisor divides her time between this student, other students, her own research, administrative tasks, lectures, preparing for lectures, evaluating student essays etc.

Priority

For the student the dissertation might be the most important thing in life just then. Perhaps almost more important than life. (Just think about how many relationships are ruined by dissertations.) For the supervisor, the student is just another student and the dissertation just another dissertation. Sure, there sometimes are exceptional students and papers, but most of them are routine to the supervisor.

Memory capacity

Because the student is so immersed in the topic she is actually storing most of it in her head. She can think about it, revise it, have detailed discussions about it, at all times. The supervisor probably forgets most things about the topic between the meetings. He probably stores a some kind of general idea, or an outline of it in his head. Therefore the supervisor must remind himself of the topic every time before a meeting.

Time used before a meeting

Usually the supervisor(s) asks for a plan, summary, an outline or something similar before a meeting. The student will spend days or hours doing this. She will evaluate the whole research and then will try to summarise where she currently is at. The supervisor will probably have an hour or two to read this summary and understand the situation.

So often instead of efficient communication, this leads to a communication breakdown. The plan, summary, or the outline is too long for the supervisor to really digest in that hour or two. In the meeting the supervisor will then pose questions that the student has already answered in the summary.

The alternatives?

Is there a solution then? Maybe. Instead of the written situation report, perhaps it would be wiser to communicate with different means.

I’ve personally tried creating pdf-presentations. And it seems to work. The downside is that the presentation is extra work. Usually the summary can be created from the written chapters with copying and pasting. But the presentation is extra work which will not be useful in anything else. But doing the slides is a really really useful exercise in encapsulating the research for oneself. It truly clarifies the topic when one tries to think how to squeeze it into five to ten pages.

Another good way might be using mind maps. They are a nice way of giving a general overview into the research. It is easy to see if there is something crucial missing, or if the topic is threatened by too many sidetracks. Mind maps can be slightly cryptic but they work well as starting points for discussion.

Naturally there is still use for the written reports. Among other things, they prove that the student can express his/her thoughts in prose. And they might help some students suffering from a writer’s block. Forcing oneself to write the report might just help getting through it. I think I’m using this blog in a similar manner. I’m keeping up my writing skills while I’m going through literature and not actually writing my thesis.

The student who cried wolf

I think it is best for the student to try and understand the situation from the supervisor’s perspective. Yes, you are desperate but try to remember that you are not the only thing in your supervisor’s life. Do not call out to your supervisor all the time. Do not swamp them in constant revisions. Try to gauge your problems and contact your supervisor only when it is really necessary. Remember that you’re getting only a limited amount of time from them and it just might run out at some point.

  1. Different countries use these terms differently. For example, master’s paper in the UK is a dissertation and a doctorate paper is a thesis. But in Finland the master’s paper is a thesis and the doctorate paper is a dissertation… So, here i’m going to use them interchangeably. []

Neologism: indivisual

Ong: Interfaces of the WordToday’s neologism: indivisual [in-duh-vizh-oo-uh]. The individual, non-shared visual perception experienced by a single user.

I came up with this when I was going through Walter J. Ong’s book Interfaces of the Word. I was taking notes and just made a typo while writing the word individual. I started to correct it and suddenly realised how brilliant the new word was.

Ong’s later book Orality and Literacy was perhaps more generally interesting as an overall media philosophy, the Interfaces relates directly to my PhD project. Especially chapter 2, where Ong makes the point that the writer’s audience is always a fiction.

Ong concentrates the written word but I will take some of his ideas and use them on visual communication. And so this accidentally born neologism is perfect.

Ong argues that writers do not really imagine their readers individually but in a more generalised way. I would use the word audience, but according to Ong this would be wrong:

The orator has before him an audience which is true audience, a collectivity. “Audience” is a collective noun. There is no such collective noun for readers, nor, so far as I am able to  puzzle out, can there be. “Readers” is a plural. Readers do not form a collectivity, acting here and now on one another and on the speaker as members of an audience do. We can devise a singularized concept for them, it is true, such as “readership.” […] But “readership” is not a collective noun. It is an abstraction in a way that “audience” is not. (Ong 1977, p. 58)1

But it is not impossible for us to imagine an individual reader or several of them and compare their experiences. Like companies and advertising agencies create several types of imagined customers and try to guess how these will react to the product or campaign.

So in the same way we can imagine an individual user and how he or she experiences some visual product, artefact or whatever we ship out. And we must accept that there will be indivisual differences between users.
